History of Murwillumbah pool

A river pool was originally Murwillumbah’s town pool until some civic-minded people had the idea of building a public baths.

In 1938 a 30 m in-ground pool was established on the corner of Tumbulgum Road. In 1962, an Olympic Pool was constructed and the original pool was subdivided into three smaller pools, consisting of a babies' wading pool, a 15 m children's wading pool and a springboard diving pool. The giant hill slide was a welcome addition in 1980.

An upgrade of all facilities took place in 2008, which saw the Murwillumbah complex transformed into a state-of-the-art aquatic centre, Tweed Regional Aquatic Centre, catering to a wide variety of pool users from elite swimmers to users of the hydrotherapy pool recovering from injury, an operation or a disability.

Mobility lift to support getting into pool

Mobility lifts

The mobility lifts at TRAC centres are available on request. There will be times when mobility lifts will be unavailable due to programs and bookings. Please call the centres direct to arrange access times.

They are simple to operate, safe and dignified for the occupant. The lift features a contoured seat which travels vertically in and out of the pool and is fully operated by the occupant.

It is advised that you contact the centre before arriving to allow time to set the unit in place. You are welcome to arrange to see the lift in operation before use.

Staff can provide some assistance in the operation of the mobility lift. It is expected that if your disability requires a care person they should accompany you to assist.

Lift capacity 250 kg. For more information about the mobility lifts visit greenhousehealth.com.au.

Indoor heated hydrotherapy pool

TRAC offers a state-of-the-art hydrotherapy pool for both individuals and professional organisations to conduct therapy or exercise programs.

The pool is heated to 34 degrees Celsius and is designed specifically for hydrotherapy use. The pool is 15 m by 8 m with a depth ranging from 0.9 m to 1.5 m.

Entry to the pool is via a ramp, submersible wheel chair or hoist providing easy access for disabled or injured persons. Dedicated hydrotherapy change rooms are available, equipped with hand rails, a change table and hot showers.

Hydrotherapy is basic "water therapy" where the buoyancy, resistance and warmth of the water maximise the physical and mental benefits. An aquatic exercise program can provide benefits not found with other exercise and can accelerate fitness and mobility.

Hydrotherapy is ideal for people recovering from muscle, joint pain or injury as part of a rehabilitation program.

Hydrotherapy can be used to treat many illnesses and conditions. Consult with your doctor before visiting.

Indoor heated teaching pool

The indoor heated teaching pool is used to run the Learn to Swim program.

The pool is heated to 34 degrees Celcius and is designed specifically for program use. The pool is 12 m by 8 m with a depth ranging from 1.1 m to 1.2 m and includes a teaching ledge along one side.

When the indoor heated teaching pool is not being used for lessons, this pool can be used for recreation swimming for children under parental supervision.  Parents are required to follow TRAC’s Supervision of Children policy at all times which can be found on the safety and rules page.
