History

A river pool was originally Murwillumbah’s town pool until some civic minded people had the idea of building a public baths.. In 1938 a 30m in-ground pool was established on the corner of Tumbulgum Road. In 1962, an Olympic Pool was constructed and the original pool was subdivided into three smaller pools, consisting of a babies' wading pool, a 15m children's wading pool and a spring board diving pool. The giant hill slide was a welcome addition in 1980. An upgrade of all facilities took place in 2008, which saw the Murwillumbah complex transformed into a state-of-the-art aquatic centre, Tweed Regional Aquatic Centre, catering to a wide variety of pool users from elite swimmers to users of the hydrotherapy pool recovering from injury, an operation or a disability. The centre now boasts an outdoor area with a 50m pool, a childs play pool and a 100m waterslide. The indoor area has a 25m lap pool incorporating a board diving pool area, a 12m by 8m Teaching pool and purpose-built hydrotherapy pool.

The complex has been refurbished on several occasions since it was constructed including the construction of a learn-to-swim pool in the mid 1990s. The latest upgrade saw the pool given an equipotential bonding treatment, tile repairs, replacement of expansion joints and the installation of new heating and chemical dosing systems in the teaching pool. The shade structure over the teaching pool was also upgraded.
